Destination Imagination
In late March 2007 we had two teams of Arlington students compete in the national Destination Imagination regional challenge. Both teams spent weeks developing and creating a “solution” to the proposed challenge using creativity, imagination, and teamwork. One group of seven AEC 6th grade girls placed fourth and won the “Spirit of DI” award for their stellar teamwork abilities. Another group of Arlington 4th graders also won the “Spirit of DI” award in their division for their unbroken determination. AEC showcased both challenges to the Arlington community at an open presentation in early May.

Babysitting Opportunities/Training
AEC is actively working with the Arlington Family Connection (AFC) to connect local families with trained and experienced middle school babysitters and mothers-helpers. In January 2007 we ran a Red Cross Babysitter Training and Infant/Child CPR certification course, which we hope to offer again in the near future. AEC and AFC offer a monthly Parent’s Afternoon Out that gives local parents a chance to drop their children off for the afternoon while supervised middle school students get practical babysitting experience.

Future Worlds Art Show
AEC is preparing a middle school art show to culminate our first year of operation and continuous art creation. Centered around the theme of Future Worlds, our students are creating artwork in their art classes offered by the Arlington Center for the Arts and AEC. In the next six weeks students and staff will work together to curate, advertise, and eventually present the art show to the Arlington community on June 11, 2007.
